The Art of Dreaming Big as an Adult

One of the saddest things I’ve noticed about adult humans is that so many of us eventually lose our ability to concoct big, unwieldy dreams. We start out our lives as bright, shiny people who whole-heartedly trust in our ability to become paleontologists and marine biologists and professional ballerinas and Grammy-award-winning performers, as if those careers are available to anyone and everyone who dares to believe hard enough.
Then, we often find that we’re bad at science or afraid of scuba diving or too short or tragically off-key, and more often than not, that big, beautiful dream doesn’t transform or find a new outlet for expression, it simply dies. What a fucking bummer! No wonder people complain about how boring and unfulfilling it can be to reach adulthood. They’ve allowed their imaginations to shrivel up before they bury them six feet under.
Now, of course this doesn’t happen to all grown-ups. There are plenty of us who maintain our wildest daydreams and give ourselves permission to believe that these grand fantasies might one day come to fruition. But it certainly isn’t the norm. Let me give you an example…
